What should I expect in my first session?

In your first session — commonly known as the intake session — your provider may start by going over forms with you, including confidentiality, cancellation or rescheduling policies, payment, and your history with mental health. Your provider should walk you through each step carefully so you fully understand all information before receiving treatment.

After reviewing the forms, your provider will begin by asking questions about you, including:

  • What made you seek treatment?
  • What symptoms — if at all — have you been experiencing?
  • Do you have a history of mental health concerns?
  • What is your target goal to get out of therapy?
  • What strengths do you have?
  • What and who does your support system look like?

By answering these questions, your therapist will better understand who you are and what kind of treatment you may need, as well as what your meetings will look like in the future.

Although it may not seem like much hard-earned progress in the first few sessions, keep with it! Do not expect therapy to provide quick-fixes for what should be long-term solutions. Your provider is trained to work with you on your frustrations in order to find reasonable solutions throughout your treatment.
