# Questions to keep in mind when learning about your insurance benefits

Before locking down on an insurance plan, make sure you are asking yourself these questions:

* Does my insurance company cover mental health care services?
* Will I need a referral from my primary care physician to get insurance to cover my treatment?
* Do I need a precertification from my insurance company to receive mental health care? 
* How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover? 
* What is the coverage amount per therapy session? 
* Will I have a deductible, copay or coinsurance?
* Will I need renewed approval for each session? 
* Does my insurance cover out-of-network providers? 
* How can I access in-network providers in my location? 
* Does the percentage paid by my insurance company vary in-network vs. out-of-network? 
* Is there a list of diagnoses covered by my insurance? 
* Is there a difference in my benefits for inpatient vs. outpatient treatment? 
* How many days can I stay if I am to be hospitalized or receiving inpatient care? 
* What prescription benefits am I offered? 
* Are there copays for medication? 
* Are there different levels of prescription coverage depending on specific medication?
