Questions to keep in mind when learning about your insurance benefits

Before locking down on an insurance plan, make sure you are asking yourself these questions:

  • Does my insurance company cover mental health care services?
  • Will I need a referral from my primary care physician to get insurance to cover my treatment?
  • Do I need a precertification from my insurance company to receive mental health care?
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
  • Will I have a deductible, copay or coinsurance?
  • Will I need renewed approval for each session?
  • Does my insurance cover out-of-network providers?
  • How can I access in-network providers in my location?
  • Does the percentage paid by my insurance company vary in-network vs. out-of-network?
  • Is there a list of diagnoses covered by my insurance?
  • Is there a difference in my benefits for inpatient vs. outpatient treatment?
  • How many days can I stay if I am to be hospitalized or receiving inpatient care?
  • What prescription benefits am I offered?
  • Are there copays for medication?
  • Are there different levels of prescription coverage depending on specific medication?
