Payment assistance terms
Along with the many types of health insurance plans, there are also terms we recommend you come acquainted with during your process, as many of them could help you cover costs in some cases. You can also speak with your provider about which of these you would like to be a part of.
- Charity Care Programs
- Ensure that eligible and uninsured people can receive medical care, even if they cannot pay individually
- Only available for reasonable and necessary medical services for diagnosis and treatment
- Grants from Nonprofit and Government Agencies
- Given to fund mental health programs
- Given to help individuals meet requirements to pay for mental health services
- Local Assistance Programs
- Assists individuals who can’t pay for services
- Funded by state and local governments
- Federal, or any government, funding for substance abuse programs
- Provides access to substance abuse treatment services
- Based on financial need
- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) makes grants available for individuals undergoing substance abuse and/or mental illness
- Applications, requirements, and submission information can be found on the SAMHSA website here
- Access to recovery (ATR) voucher
- Available to those seeking support for treatment must be:
- Minimum 18 years old
- History of substance use or abuse
- Annual income below 200% Federal Poverty level
- Resident of a county that provides ATR
- Patients choose from a wide variety of facilities for treatment
- Both state and federally funded (can vary state to state)

- State welfare or child and family services funds
- Provide funding for family support and preservation services
- Varies at state and local levels

- U.S. Department of VA funds
- Offers support for veterans’ healthcare expenses
- Supports through in-person appointments at VA facilities, tele-health sessions and online resources

- IHS/Tribal/Urban (ITU) funds
- Indian Health Service (IHS) is a federal health program for American Indians & Alaskan Natives
- Funds towards mental health programs and other services for the population
